Indigenous Master Gardner Seed to Spirit Program
Our Teachings and Focus
This initiative celebrates and honors Mother Earth as the foundation of life, health, and wellness. Our guiding principle is simple: Heal the Land, Heal the People.
Through the Seed to Spirit Indigenous Master Gardener Program, we nurture living soil health and resilience, building a harmonious relationship between people,
agriculture, and native habitats. Guided by the wisdom and knowledge of our Elders, we keep the seeds growing, both literally and metaphorically, by engaging our youth in hands-on learning and connection to the land.
We educate and cultivate understanding of:
The Elements: Fire, Water, Air, and Earth
The Sun and its life-giving energy
The Moon and its cycles
The Seasons: Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter
Through experiential learning, youth gain practical knowledge in building living soils and developing a deeper relationship with the land.
They learn to observe climate, weather, and timing, understanding how these natural rhythms shape growth and sustainability.
Our ultimate goal is thriving health and wellbeing, helping people reconnect with themselves by growing and eating food from their own hands and land.
Program Phases
Seed | Year 1
In the first year, we establish relationships among the people involved and lay the groundwork for the garden. Together, we create a shared vision, design the space, and prepare a curriculum suited to the site and community.
Like a seed planted in the dark, this stage is about quiet beginnings, developing awareness of what is needed for healthy growth, strong roots, and interdependence.
Root | Year 2
By the second year, the seed has taken root and reached toward the light. Growth expands upward while roots deepen below. This phase establishes a strong foundation for a resilient, healthy, and unified community, a place of belonging where growth and connection flourish.
Flower | Year 3
In the third year, the program comes into full bloom. Participants work, learn, and eat together from the garden, experiencing the health and wellness that come from shared effort and established interdependence. Each person blossoms in their own way, contributing to the healing of both land and people.
Fruit | Year 4
The fourth year focuses on the full cycle of cultivation, observing timing, planting, irrigating, tending, harvesting, washing, preparing, cooking, and sharing.
Upon completion, participants receive a certificate recognizing their growth and contribution. They emerge with something truly fruitful, the knowledge, experience, and uplifted spirit to continue nurturing the wellbeing of the land and their communities.
This journey from Seed to Spirit embodies the cycle of life, teaching us that when we care for Mother Earth, she in turn nourishes us, body, mind, and soul returning us to the path of being beneficial keystone species.
